Humpback whale rescued near Poel released into North Sea after transport delay - News and Statistics

A humpback whale rescued from a bay in the Baltic Sea near the island of Poel has been released into the North Sea after several days of transport. The animal had been transported by barge, and as of approximately 9:00 a.m., it was no longer on the vessel, according to Jens Schwarck of the private rescue initiative, speaking to the news agency dpa.

Based on initial information from Bild, the captain of the tugboat reportedly ordered the whale’s release. However, the release did not occur at the location initially intended by the rescue initiative. Instead, it took place about 70 kilometers north of Skagen in Denmark.

Schwarck indicated that it was initially unclear whether the whale had been equipped with a transmitter. No information was available regarding the animal’s condition or the specific manner in which it left the ship.

The transport of the whale had stalled on Friday. Wind forces of up to 6 generated waves as high as 1.5 meters in the transition zone between the North and Baltic Seas, conditions deemed too dangerous for the barge carrying the whale. Consequently, the tug turned away and headed south. Later that evening, movement resumed: at around 19:20, the humpback whale deliberately approached the barge’s exit.
