Greece women’s national water polo team suffered a 13–10 defeat to Australia women’s national water polo team in the World Cup Division 1 qualifiers, significantly complicating its chances of reaching the final stage.

The match took place in Rotterdam, where Greece competed without captain Eleftheria Plevritou, while Antonis Vlontakis served as acting head coach due to the suspension of Haris Pavlidis.

The result left Greece at the bottom of Group B and forced the team into classification matches for places five to eight, where it must compete for the final available qualification spot for the Sydney finals.

Greece trailed for most of the match and managed to take the lead only once at 5–4 in the second period, following a goal by Tornarou. Australia responded with three quick goals and maintained control for the remainder of the game.

Despite a brief equaliser at 8–8 in the third period, Australia regained momentum with consecutive goals and extended its lead to 12–9 early in the final quarter. Greece struggled with efficiency in power-play situations, missed a penalty through Elena Xenaki, and was further affected by the exclusion of Myriokefalitaki after three fouls.

Australia held on to secure the win, leaving Greece needing strong results in its remaining matches.

Greece is set to face Hungary women’s national water polo team next, before playing Australia again and concluding against Japan women’s national water polo team in the final qualification matches.
