On Thursday, April 30th, the Saeima adopted amendments to the Law on the National Guard of the Republic of Latvia in its final reading, which aim to expand the opportunities for society to participate in national defence.

The law aims to introduce a new status – ‘National Guard supporter’ – as well as improve several regulations related to the activities of the National Guard.

The new status of a National Guard supporter is intended as an opportunity for Latvian citizens over the age of 18 who, due to health, age or other reasons, cannot perform military service as full members of the National Guard, but who nevertheless want to provide practical support to the National Guard.

“By introducing the status of National Guard supporter, we are providing an opportunity for those people who cannot serve formally, but are ready to make a significant contribution with their skills and knowledge, to participate in national defence. Currently, more than 140 citizens have officially expressed their desire to participate with the National Guard supporter status, which confirms the readiness of the population to voluntarily provide practical support to the National Guard for the fulfillment of certain needs and tasks,” said Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds.

In the near future, the application procedure will be improved, which will allow associations and various organizations to easily apply for this status as well as individuals.

Areas of support will be defined based on the specific needs of National Guard units. The most commonly required support is in the areas of medicine and evacuation, logistics and supply, communications and IT, engineering, communications and catering, as well as in other specialities.
