Ukraine’s Drone Strategy Leaves Russia Losing More Troops Than It Can Replace for Five Consecutive Months — UNITED24 Media

Russia’s military has recorded a fifth consecutive month in which personnel losses exceed recruitment, driven in part by sustained operations from Ukraine’s drone units.

According to the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (USF) on May 4, the imbalance reflects “systemic work” by drone units that continues to reduce Russia’s ability to maintain combat intensity along the front line.

The statement cited Commander of the USF, Major Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, who said: “For the fifth month in a row, we have managed to keep this balance negative, and this is one of the most important tasks of the Defense Forces’ direct impact on the enemy’s combat capability and its pressure on the battlefield.”

Russia mobilized or recruited 148,400 personnel between December 2025 and April 2026. Over the same period, confirmed losses inflicted solely by Ukrainian drone strikes reached 156,735 personnel, based on figures from the Delta situational awareness system.

Monthly data shows losses consistently matching or exceeding recruitment figures throughout the five-month period.

The USF also reported that its units have established an operational benchmark in which at least 30% of all targets engaged should be enemy personnel. The current cumulative figure stands at 29.59% over 11 months of operations. During that time, Ukrainian drone units verified strikes on 305,700 targets, including 90,470 personnel.

In April 2026 alone, USF units struck 10,581 Russian troops, accounting for 31.15% of all personnel losses attributed to drone operations by Ukraine’s Defense Forces that month. According to Brovdi, this means roughly one in three confirmed drone strikes against personnel was carried out by USF units.

The USF further estimates the cost efficiency of such operations at approximately $882 per confirmed strike on enemy personnel. “Exchanging enemy resources for the plastic and metal of a drone is one of the most effective exchange rates in modern warfare,” Brovdi said.

Earlier, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said Russia is suffering significantly higher losses than Ukraine—around a four-to-one ratio—driven largely by drone warfare, with Russian casualties reaching up to 35,000 troops per month.
