Coop Estonia ended its 2025 financial year with a 22.8% market share and an increase in net sales, to €855.3 million.
The cooperative’s profit decreased to €10.2 million as the company absorbed rising costs, including wage increases and supplier price hikes, rather than passing them on to consumers to support local purchasing power.
Last year, Coop’s regional cooperatives invested €9 million to open four new stores, while 12 existing ones were renovated.
Positive Performance
The company added that it faced a challenging economic environment during the financial year.
Coop plans to open 13 new stores and renovate 11 outlets in 2026, investing over €20 million.
This strategy focuses on replacing older, smaller shops with more energy-efficient and consumer-friendly Coop Konsum grocery stores.
Two have already opened (the Keila Maksimarket in Harju County and Puhja Ehituskeskus in Tartu County), with more to follow.
The acquisition of Prisma Peremarket in Estonia (13 stores) is currently awaiting approval from the Competition Authority.
This would boost Coop’s national market share from 23% to 28% and significantly increase its market share in Tallinn from 5% to 17%, though it would remain fourth in the capital.
In total, the Coop network is set to expand by 26 new stores in 2026.
To counter falling profitability, Coop is investing in innovation and automation.
This includes a €1.5 million renewal of logistics centre forklifts in 2025, a €0.5 million warehouse robot in 2026, and continued investment in solar parks and electric car chargers.
Growing Regional Inequality
Coop’s data reveals growing regional inequality.
While the counties of Tallinn, Harju and Tartu show higher incomes and more diverse premium shopping baskets, areas like Ida-Viru County exhibit a higher price sensitivity and a focus on basic, cheaper goods.
According to the retail cooperative, this highlights the need for fiscal support, such as a reduction in VAT on basic foodstuffs.
The Coop retail group consists of 18 regional consumer cooperatives and over 60,000 members, operating 315 sales units across Estonia.
