The European Union wants the accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova to start as soon as possible, said Friday, in Chisinau, the head of European diplomacy Kaja Kallas, who stated that no exact date has been established in this regard, the Republic of Moldova submitted its application for EU accession on March 3, 2022, and on June 17 of the same year the European Commission issued its opinion on the application for EU accession.
On June 23, 2022, the European Council granted the Republic of Moldova the status of a candidate country and invited the European Commission to submit to the Council a report on the fulfillment of the conditions set out in the opinion of the European Community bloc regarding the application for accession. On June 25, 2024, the EU organized its first accession conference with the Republic of Moldova, formally starting the accession negotiations. For her part, Maia Sandu appreciated that her country has made progress in putting practice of reforms and reiterated that the Republic of Moldova is determined to sign the EU accession treaty by 2028.
