Derry Camogie’s ‘leap of faith’ delivers two All-Ireland titles

Derry camogie is celebrating one of the most significant times in its history following a double All-Ireland success that has cemented the county’s status as a rising force in the game.

The momentous occasion saw the Oak Leaf county secure two national titles, validating a bold new strategy to invest in the long-term development of its youth squads.

This year, Derry Camogie took a strategic ‘leap of faith’ by entering Development Teams at both U15 and U17 levels. Despite the increased demands on coaching, resources, and time, the initiative paid immediate dividends.

Last week, the U17 Development team brought their campaign to a thrilling conclusion at Naomh Olaf in Dublin. Facing a heavily fancied Waterford side, Derry delivered a superb performance to secure a seven-point victory (3-11 to 2-07) and clinch the All-Ireland Development Shield.

The momentum set the tone for a remarkable weekend, where the Derry U16s were crowned All-Ireland Champions. In a dominant display against Wexford, the team secured a 5-09 to 2-08 victory. Led by captain Eva Forbes and a Player of the Match performance from Feina Kerr, the win marks a pinnacle for this age group and a bright sign for the future of the senior ranks.

Derry Camogie attributes this success to the collective effort of players, parents, and coaches, as well as the vital support of their commercial partners.

In a gesture of gratitude, John Bosco O’Hagan, of the Specialist Group, was presented with a framed All-Ireland jersey featuring the company logo. Specialist Group, led by John Bosco and Ciaran O’Hagan, has provided extraordinary generosity since becoming sponsors last year. Their commitment has gone beyond financial aid, with the “Specialist family” attending every single match this season.

“Derry Camogie is rising,” the Executive said in a statement. “It is rising because of the people who stand with us.”
