Cody Rhodes now knows exactly when and where he will defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Gunther.

During this week’s episode of SmackDown, Paul Heyman revealed that the favor he owed Gunther would result in a major title match at WWE Clash in Italy on May 31.

The announcement came just one week after Gunther blindsided Rhodes on SmackDown, escalating tensions between two of WWE’s biggest stars.

While Rhodes initially pushed for the championship match to happen immediately, Heyman made it clear the contract already had a different destination in mind.

The rivalry traces back to the road to WrestleMania 42, when Gunther attacked Seth Rollins during Rollins’ ongoing issues with Paul Heyman.

After WrestleMania, Heyman thanked his ally for helping deal with Rollins, but GUNTHER insisted a simple thank-you was not enough and demanded a favor in return.

That favor was officially revealed on SmackDown. Heyman explained that he used his influence within WWE to secure Gunther an Undisputed WWE Championship match against Rhodes at Clash in Italy, scheduled for May 31 at the Inalpi Arena in Turin.

Rhodes attempted to fast-track the confrontation by telling Gunther they could wrestle that same night. Heyman quickly shut that idea down, pointing to the contract and confirming the official date for the title bout instead.

Following the announcement, Gunther tried to attack Rhodes from behind and briefly locked in a sleeper hold. Rhodes managed to escape before delivering his latest message to the challenger, calling himself “easy to find, but hard to beat.”

The upcoming championship clash also carries extra intrigue because Rhodes previously defeated Gunther during the 2024 Crown Jewel Championship match. This time, however, the stakes are considerably higher with the Undisputed WWE Championship on the line.

WWE has already begun heavily positioning Clash in Italy as one of the company’s marquee international events of the year. With Rhodes and Gunther now officially on a collision course, the road to Turin may quickly become one of WWE’s toughest battlegrounds heading into summer.
