You could recreate the taste of classic pub grub at home with just one bag of chips from Iceland. We Brits have an undying love for a good chip, and while they’re available in every supermarket and simple enough to bung in the oven, it’s notoriously difficult to achieve a portion that comes anywhere close to rivalling those served up in pubs, restaurants – or even your local chippy.
However, one woman on social media reckons she’s tracked down the finest oven chips on the market, and they’ll set you back less than £3 from Iceland. Sarah revealed that the chips she picked up from Iceland taste remarkably like those served alongside almost every dish at Wetherspoons, one of Britain’s most beloved pub chains.
Wetherspoons chips are renowned for their gloriously crispy coating and light, fluffy interior, and regulars are so devoted to them that entire Facebook pages have been set up in their honour. Some exist purely to show off an impressively long chip, while others are filled with disgruntled punters venting their frustration over a measly portion.
So if you fancy taking control of your own Wetherspoons-style chip portions, Iceland is apparently the place to head, as Sarah insists there’s a bag of chips on the shelves that are “exactly” like the pub’s beloved offering.
She said: “If you like Wetherspoons and you like their chips, even though you only get 10 chips, I think I’ve found them. You can make them at home. They’re from Iceland, and they’re called Chunky Chips.”
The woman then displayed a chip she had freshly cooked, noting they were identical in texture and had the “same crispiness” as a Wetherspoons chip – and she was absolutely thrilled with her discovery.
She added: “This has been my life goal. This has been my life’s mission: to find out what chips they use. I’ve asked them, and they never give you an answer. Now, I can cook my own Wetherspoons chips at home.”
The precise chips featured in Sarah’s video are the Ridiculously Crispy Chunky Chips from Iceland. They come in a purple bag, and are £2.75 each for a 1.2kg bag – although they are eligible for the multibuy price from £2.50 each.
The chips have garnered 34 reviews on the Iceland website, with nearly every customer awarding them a full five stars. The overwhelming majority describe the chips as “delicious”, with one customer boldly claiming they were the “best chips I’ve had in ages”.
One person said: “Well, after trying every other make of frozen chips, I tried these, expecting they would also end up in the bin. What a surprise. They were by far the best. Nice and crunchy, cooked evenly, and actually tasted like proper chips, also incredibly good value.”
Another added: “In two words: Absolutely lush.”
A third wrote: “Finally found the perfect chip. Chunky, crispy, fluffy and tasty. I won’t be buying any other chips from now on.”
Viewers who commented on Sarah’s video were equally eager to sample the Iceland chips for themselves, though some pointed out that Wetherspoons actually uses McCain’s oven chips, achieving their distinctive crispiness by cooking them in a chip pan rather than the oven.
One Wetherspoons employee said: “I work at Spoons and they are just McCains chips. Standard British chips, really.”
