Six years ago, when she quit the Democratic League of Kosovo, LDK, Vjosa Osmani was a rising star. Last weekend, she returned to the party fold, a five-year presidential term under her belt.
Six years ago, Osmani formed a pact with Albin Kurti. Last weekend, she turned on the prime minister who had denied her a second term as Kosovo’s president, and embraced once more the legacy of Ibrahim Rugova, the late founder of the LDK and, to many Kosovars, the father of their nation.
In a speech on Sunday confirming her return to the LDK, Osmani said that “their path” – referring to Kurti and his Vetevendosje party – is one that takes the country back to elections every three months.
“The other path is the path of Rugova’s testament, the path of a serious state, of strong alliances and international respect,” Osmani said in her speech to LDK supporters. “Kosovo’s path which never bends but is not isolated either. Today, together with you, I have chosen this path.”
