Greek investigators suspect that a military sea drone discovered on a Greek island last week veered off course owing to a technical malfunction. Sources reported on Friday that the drone’s presence has stirred diplomatic tensions between Greece and Ukraine, with the latter denying ownership.

The explosives-laden drone, alleged by Greece to be Ukrainian, was found on May 7 near Lefkada by fishermen. Greek intelligence and military are currently reverse-engineering the drone and examining its metadata to ascertain its origin and intended mission. Investigators are also exploring whether it was launched from a mothership or shore-based site.

The incident has raised concerns about maritime safety, with Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias emphasizing the risks such a device poses to navigation. Meanwhile, Greece is coordinating with the European Union for potential diplomatic actions as further details emerge.
