Эдгар Ринкевич

On Friday, the president listened to the opinions of faction representatives regarding the preferred coalition model, possible candidates for the position of prime minister, and the government’s tasks leading up to the Saeima elections.

The president is convinced that despite the upcoming elections, it is possible to form a functioning government that has support in the Saeima. Rinkēvičs believes that, despite political uncertainty and instability, the most important task of the new Cabinet of Ministers remains strengthening the defense and internal and external security of the country.

The president will continue consultations on Saturday, May 16, at 14:45 at the Riga Castle, meeting again with all delegated representatives of the Saeima factions. Rinkēvičs’ statement for the media is scheduled for Saturday at 16:00.

As reported, on Friday Rinkēvičs began political consultations with representatives of all parliamentary factions amid a government crisis following the resignation of Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (“New Unity”).

Currently, the initiative to form a new government has been taken on by the National Alliance, the Union of Greens and Farmers, and the “United List,” also considering the participation of other partners in the coalition, including “New Unity.”

During meetings with the president, party representatives expressed a desire to form as broad a coalition as possible, but did not rule out the formation of a minority government.
