The Czech Republic has completed the certification and testing of the prototype of the modernized Mi-171ŠKM Krovka helicopter, based on the Soviet-Russian Mi-171. The project involves adapting the aircraft to NATO standards and could serve as an important example for Ukraine, which continues to actively use its Mi-8/17 fleet. This was reported by Defense Express with reference to CZ Defence, according to UNN.

    Details

The modernization includes the installation of new navigation and communication systems, a Mode 5 IFF identification system, modern radio stations with COMSEC and TRANSEC support, as well as military GPS and tactical satellite communications.

In addition to updating the avionics and control systems, the helicopters will receive enhanced ballistic protection and new self-defense measures.

The Czech Republic plans to operate the modernized Mi-171s until the 2040s

In the Czech Republic, the modernization will be carried out for eight Mi-171Š helicopters with a rear ramp. After the update, they are planned to be used at least until 2035–2042.

Defense Express notes that the Czech Republic is not abandoning Soviet aircraft even after receiving American UH-1Y Venoms, but rather views them as complementary to each other.

The modernization also involves creating a modular cargo compartment with the possibility of quickly installing medical or other specialized equipment. Some design changes were implemented after consultations with military pilots and paratroopers.

In Ukraine, modernizing Mi-8/17s could be cheaper than purchasing new helicopters

Defense Express emphasizes that Ukrainian army aviation will continue to use Mi-8/17s alongside Western helicopters for many years to come.

Modernizing Soviet aircraft to NATO standards could simplify operation, improve compatibility with Western systems, and extend the service life of the helicopters.

The publication notes that such an approach could be more economically viable than the mass purchase of new aircraft, particularly Western models like the H225M.
