Two South Koreans who had been detained by online scam rings in Cambodia were rescued following a coordinated operation between security authorities from both countries.
Authorities said a Korean man in his 30s with a disability was freed by Cambodian law enforcement from a hotel in the Sihanoukville region on May 7 after traveling to Cambodia in response to an online job posting targeting people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
After being held for more than a month and blackmailed for 20-thousand U.S. dollars, the man contacted the South Korean Embassy by email seeking help.
On Monday, a Korean woman in her 20s was rescued after traveling to Cambodia to meet a Chinese man she had met online and ended up being detained for ransom in Phnom Penh.
The suspects arrested in both cases are Chinese nationals. South Korean police have also launched an investigation into a broker accused of luring the man through the fraudulent job offer.
