National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said the Lee Jae Myung administration is preparing for all possibilities as the investigation continues into the attack on the HMM Namu cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, noting that the main perpetrator has yet to be identified.
Appearing on a KBS program Sunday, Wi compared the case to how a multinational investigation determined that the 2010 torpedo attack on the Cheonan warship in the Yellow Sea was carried out by North Korea.
He said the administration will accelerate the investigation, share the results with the South Korean public and take necessary follow-up measures.
Responding to a Foreign Ministry official’s call for a strong diplomatic response once the perpetrators are identified, Wi said the goal would be to hold those responsible to account, prevent a recurrence, and ensure safe navigation in the strait.
Regarding continued United States pressure for Seoul to participate in military operations to reopen the chokepoint, Wi said the administration plans to contribute and take part as necessary in accordance with domestic and international law.
