Britain’s only World Championship win came in Germany in 1936

Great Britain were beaten 5-1 by reigning champions United States at the 2026 Ice Hockey World Championship in Switzerland.

Paul Cotter opened the scoring for the US but Pete Russell’s GB side drew level in the second period when Nathanael Halbert powered a shot into the roof of the net.

But after Liam Steele was penalised for slashing, Isaac Howard put the USA into a lead they never looked like losing in Zurich.

Goals from Olivier Mathieu, Declan Carlile and a second for Howard all in the third period wrapped up victory.

Britain, who lost to Austria in their opening game, are next in action against Hungary on Tuesday.

Each country plays seven matches in the group stage.
