Foreign Minister Cho Hyun has spoken with his Iranian counterpart on the phone, requesting Tehran’s to state its position regarding an explosion and fire aboard the HMM Namu in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this month.

According to Seoul’s foreign ministry on Sunday, Cho explained to Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi about the South Korean government’s additional investigation into the attack, which it tentatively concluded was externally conducted.

The minister also demanded Iran’s position on the relevant facts as he stressed the importance of safe and free navigation by all vessels in the strait.

Araghchi, for his part, explained the current situation in the Middle East and agreed on the need to restore safe transit in the key shipping route through cessation of confrontation in the waterway.

The two sides also agreed to continue to communicate on ensuring the safety of South Korean vessels and crew members in the choke point.
