South Korea plans to invest 50-point-four billion won, or about 33-point-five million U.S. dollars, in the next five years to develop core technologies needed for AI-based humanoid robots.

The Ministry of Science and ICT said in a statement Monday that it will join with universities, local tech companies and hospitals to build what it calls a “Korean-style artificial intelligence (AI) humanoid.”

The initiative, led by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology and set to run until 2030, is one of the key tasks of “K-Moonshot,” an AI initiative aimed at integrating AI into research and development for science and technology.

Private sector participants, including LG Electronics, Robostar, and the local wearable robot startup WeRobotics, will be responsible for developing advanced robot platforms and humanoid robot models suitable for mass production.

The project also aims to develop an AI model that enables humanoid robots to comprehensively understand visual, physical, verbal and behavioral information.

The robots developed under the project will be tested in hospitals and nursing facilities to validate their ability to perform long-term, complex tasks that support human users.
