Cefmof Hydrogen Oy operates Finland’s first hydrogen refuelling station

Finland’s first hydrogen refuelling station in Jyväskylä has progressed from the pilot phase towards commercial use, with operations developing alongside the installation of the hydrogen production unit. During the pilot phase, the focus has been on testing the station in real-life conditions, including cold winter environments, and on gathering practical experience to support the transition to commercial operations.

Cefmof operates the hydrogen refuelling station through its subsidiary, Cefmof Hydrogen Oy, which has been set up to manage operational and commercial activities. The station has been developed as part of Cefmof’s hydrogen initiatives and serves as a platform for piloting and implementing hydrogen solutions in practice.

Cefmof focuses on development, Cefmof Hydrogen on operations

Cefmof’s role is to initiate, develop and accelerate hydrogen solutions through early-stage activities such as pilot projects, partnerships and innovation work. As these solutions mature, it is a natural next step to manage their operation through a structure that enables long-term operation, investment and scaling.

Cefmof’s Executive Director Haruka Arai, says:

This is a natural progression of Cefmof’s work.

”The foundation develops and validates solutions, and once they are ready for implementation, Cefmof Hydrogen enables their operation and scaling,”

Cefmof Hydrogen Oy is responsible for operating the station and related hydrogen infrastructure and services. As hydrogen solutions develop further, the company’s role may expand to include additional infrastructure and services.

Lauri Perämäki, Managing Director of Cefmof Hydrogen Oy, says:

Our role is to ensure that hydrogen solutions can be operated reliably in practice.

”The Jyväskylä refuelling station is an important step in moving from pilot activities to day-to-day operations, and in building the capabilities needed for wider deployment,”

The company can also act as the operator of solutions developed by Cefmof. In situations where market-based operators are not yet available, or where no suitable operator can be identified, Cefmof Hydrogen Oy may take an active role in enabling and operating these solutions to ensure their implementation and continuity.

The organisational model reflects a clear division of roles:

    • Cefmof acts as an enabler and accelerator, focusing on early-stage development, pilot projects and partnerships
    • Cefmof Hydrogen Oy operates business activities based on solutions that are ready for commercialisation or already commercially viable

As part of this development, selected personnel from Cefmof will take on roles within Cefmof Hydrogen Oy to support the operational phase. Cooperation between the foundation and the company will continue through clearly defined structures.

This model supports the long-term development of hydrogen solutions in Finland by ensuring that initiatives can move efficiently from early-stage development into practical, scalable implementation.
