FRANKENMUTH, Mich. (WNEM) — Two Michigan women are gaining attention on social media by posting videos of Michigan for a British comedy group.
The comedy series owner and comedian Melissa Hager and her friend Dawn made an online plea asking for U.K. creators Josh and Jase to make Hager their Michigan tour guide after the comedy duo announced that they would be returning to Michigan. That video turned into the #BritsMeetMel social media movement.
Dawn and Hager became friends 10 years ago when Dawn attended a comedy show after being told by doctors she likely didn’t have much time left due to serious health complications. The two women bonded over humor, encouragement, road trips and what they call Dawn’s “dying wishes.”
“One of the very first ones she ever used on me was simply, ‘My dying wish is that you keep going,’” Hager said. “She really believed in me and my comedy career during times I wasn’t sure I believed in myself.”
Dawn’s latest “dying wish” was for Melissa to be Josh and Jase’s Michigan tour guide, which led to the infamous video. Since then, Dawn and Hager have traveled around Michigan creating videos showcasing hidden gems, lake towns, local restaurants, small businesses, roadside attractions and destinations they think Josh and Jase would like to visit when they come to Michigan.
The movement has gained attention across Facebook, TikTok and YouTube with supporters rallying behind the pair’s friendship.
“She has every reason in the world to be bitter or defeated, and instead she somehow keeps choosing joy, people, laughter and adventure,” said Hager. “Honestly, I think that spirit is part of what’s kept her going all these years.”
