During the meeting, the parties exchanged views on the future of the EU enlargement policy and the importance of maintaining momentum in the accession process. Kachka emphasized that political signals from member states are of great importance for candidate countries.

    The sides also discussed finalizing negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement between the two nations.

    “Our priority remains the same – opening of all negotiation clusters and further progress toward EU. Discussed the importance of finalising the Free Trade Agreement negotiations between our countries,” Kachka emphasized.

    Additionally, the official noted Serbia’s openness to further intensifying bilateral dialogue.

    Media outlets initially reported a potential in-person visit by Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Serbia. However, the parties decided to reschedule for alternative dates.

    According to Dmytro Lytvyn, advisor to the President, Taras Kachka traveled to Belgrade to lay the groundwork for certain issues ahead of the upcoming visit of the Ukrainian head of state.

    In May 2026, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos urged EU member states to officially open all negotiation clusters regarding the accession of Ukraine and Moldova by this summer.

    Meanwhile, in December 2025, Serbia refused to participate in the EU-Western Balkans summit for the first time in 13 years, as progress in the country’s membership negotiations had effectively stalled.
