The incident occurred near Druskininkai, approximately 200 meters from the border. Border guards detected the man using technical surveillance means and promptly drove to the location. There, they detained a 44-year-old Polish citizen.
The man had homemade ladders with him, which he presumably intended to use to overcome the engineering barriers at the border. He also had a bicycle, a sleeping bag, tools, and personal belongings.

It is specifically noted that envelopes with cash — US dollars and Polish zlotys — were found among the Pole’s belongings. The total amount is estimated at almost 60,000 euros.
The detainee explained that he allegedly planned to climb over the fence and enter the territory of Belarus. However, the exact motives for his actions are not officially disclosed.
The Lithuanian Border Service initiated a criminal case regarding the attempt of illegal border crossing and possible money smuggling. The court chose a measure of restraint for the man in the form of a one-month arrest.
