CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — State Sen. Doug Mastriano (R-Adams) said he looks forward to serving as the U.S. ambassador to Slovakia.
President Donald Trump announced he would nominate the Midstate lawmaker to the position earlier this month. A former U.S. Army officer, Mastriano served in Czechoslovakia, West Germany, Iraq and Afghanistan before teaching at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle.

“To be going back serving, assuming confirmation by the Senate, as the ambassador there, what an honor,” Mastriano said. “I’ve served with the Slovaks in NATO for four years. I served in Afghanistan with them on several tours, good soldiers, good people. The country is beautiful.”
“We’re really looking forward to this,” he added.
Mastriano must be approved by the Senate, a process he said could take several months.
The senator was the keynote speaker Friday for Rolling Green Cemetery’s Memorial Day ceremony. More than 6,000 graves there are adorned with American flags to honor the sacrifice of servicemembers.
