Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan took part in the NATO Foreign Ministers Meeting held in Helsingborg, Sweden, on Friday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry confirmed. In a post on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, the ministry said Fidan joined his counterparts in the Swedish city for discussions.
Family photo and summit preparation
Before the formal talks, NATO foreign ministers assembled for a traditional family photo session. The Helsingborg meeting is a key preparatory step for the NATO leaders’ summit scheduled for July 7-8 in Ankara, which Türkiye will host for the second time after Istanbul in 2004. Agenda items are expected to include transatlantic burden‑sharing, defence spending, the war in Ukraine, and the alliance’s response to the Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Türkiye’s role
Türkiye, as a NATO member with the alliance’s second‑largest military, has been increasingly vocal about its strategic importance, particularly in mediating regional crises. Fidan’s attendance underscores Ankara’s active engagement in shaping NATO’s agenda ahead of the Ankara summit. Bilateral meetings on the sidelines, including with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, also took place.
