The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces scrambled its multi-role tactical fighter aircraft and placed its nationwide radar networks on high alert overnight into Sunday, May 24, moving to insulate NATO’s southeastern frontier during a massive Russian cruise missile and drone bombardment against Ukraine.

The preventive military deployment was initiated as Russian long-range aviation assets launched multi-wave precision strikes across numerous Ukrainian provinces, sending tracking signals close to neighboring European territory.

The Polish military command issued an immediate public safety broadcast on X (formerly Twitter)during the early morning hours to alert border populations to the sudden deployment of combat aircraft within domestic flight corridors.

“Attention. Due to the activity of the long-range aviation of the Russian Federation, which is carrying out strikes using airborne attack weapons on the territory of Ukraine, military aviation is operating in our airspace,” the Operational Command stated.

To ensure absolute perimeter integrity, Polish command confirmed that the military had successfully deployed all available forces and assets assigned to the theater. In tandem with the scrambled fighter pairs, ground-based anti-aircraft missile units and long-range radar reconnaissance systems were transitioned into a state of maximum operational combat readiness.

Sweden Urges Orderly NATO Rebalancing After Mixed US Troop Signals

Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson called for an “orderly” and predictable restructuring of NATO’s military footprint in Europe following a series of conflicting announcements from Washington. The Pentagon initially halted a planned deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland, a critical frontline state, only for US President Donald Trump to later announce that an additional 5,000 personnel would be sent.

Defense officials emphasized that the deployment serves a strictly preventive function, structured to guarantee the absolute security of sovereign Polish airspace in areas immediately adjacent to the active cross-border conflict zones.

The military monitoring actions unfolded as Russian forces unleashed a highly destructive saturation campaign that targeted deep-theater infrastructure and civilian populations. While air defense grids in the capital city of Kyiv were forced to engage intense waves of cruise and ballistic threats, a Russian strike drone managed to cleanly breach local safety networks in the central Ukrainian city of Cherkasy.

The drone directly impacted a densely populated residential sector, hitting a multi-story apartment block and triggering a massive, 400-square-meter structural fire that swept through apartments from the fifth to the ninth floors. State Emergency Service (DSNS) rescuers successfully extracted nine trapped residents from the burning upper floors, while medical teams treated 11 injured civilians, including two children.

With additional Russian cruise missiles crashing into agricultural facilities in the nearby Zolotonosha district and striking transport networks in Odesa, Polish operations centers maintained their defensive combat patrols until the final waves of Russian long-range bombers turned back from the Ukrainian borders.
