Romanian director Cristian Mungiu’s film “Fjord” won the Palme d’Or at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, while South Korean director Na Hong-jin’s “Hope” left without an award.
“Fjord” was announced as the top prize winner during the closing ceremony Saturday at the Grand Théâtre Lumière in Cannes, France.
The film follows a Romanian-Norwegian couple who move to a remote village and clash with neighbors over child‑rearing practices and religious beliefs.
Mungiu previously won the Palme d’Or in 2007 for “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” and later received the festival’s best screenplay award for “God’s Girls” and the best director award for “Graduation.”
“Hope,” Na’s first film invited to Cannes’ main competition, earned favorable reviews after its world premiere but did not receive any prizes.
“Hope” tells the story of mysterious events unfolding in a port village near the Demilitarized Zone.
