Poland’s railway infrastructure manager, PKP PLK, has announced a plan to re-profile tracks and switches.

This year, the company will carry out these track maintenance activities on a total length of over 2,200 km of lines and over 700 switches to keep the infrastructure in proper condition by precisely eliminating track irregularities and undulations.

The work will include, among others, railway line No. 353 Poznań Wschód – Skandawa, line No. 14 Łódź Kaliska – Tuplice, as well as lines No. 97, 98, and 99, known as the “Zakopianka” railway, i.e., the lines leading to Zakopane, one of the country’s most popular mountain resorts, located at the foot of the Tatra Mountains.

The grinding process also includes modernized lines, even before they are put into service—as was the case this year on Line No. 104 between Nowy Sącz and Marcinkowice, where passenger trains will begin regular service with the June timetable change.

In 2025, PKP PLK contracted track realignment work for nearly 2,400 km of lines and over 700 switches, and in 2024, the work covered over 2,100 km of railway lines and nearly 800 switches.

The work was carried out on the most important railway corridors. These included, among others, railway line no. 3 Warsaw Zachodnia – Kunowice, where over 600 km of track and 150 switches were re-profiled, as well as line No. 9 Warsaw Wschodnia – Gdańsk Główny, where the work covered over 500 km of track and nearly 300 switches. Work was also carried out on line No. 131 Chorzów Batory – Tczew, covering sections with a total length of over 170 km and 23 switches.

    Ongoing work on rail resurfacing

The systematic increase in the volume of rail and switch grinding and milling work is part of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe’s long-term strategy for maintaining the railway infrastructure.

Such measures make it possible to limit the need for rail replacement and maintain high standards of safety and reliability of traffic on the railway network throughout the country.

Rail re-profiling is one of the key elements of railway infrastructure maintenance, carried out on major lines for passenger and freight traffic throughout the country. In recent years, the company has maintained a high level of these works, which allows for more effective prevention of defects and simultaneously contributes to increased comfort during train travel.

“Regular rail and switch re-profiling is an investment in the safety and comfort of travel. Thanks to this work, we extend the service life of the railway infrastructure and ensure predictable operating conditions for operators,” said Krzysztof Waszkiewicz, a member of the management board of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe, responsible for railway infrastructure maintenance.

Rail re-profiling significantly affects the quality and safety of travel. By restoring the correct rail profile, the risk of derailment is reduced, and wheel-rail contact becomes more stable. These activities are preventive in nature and are part of a modern approach to railway infrastructure maintenance, focused on preventing damage and ensuring the continuity and safety of rail traffic.
