After part of an overpass collapsed in western Seoul on Tuesday afternoon, the city’s mayoral candidates have suspended their campaign activities.
Democratic Party mayoral candidate Chong Won-o visited the site and said rescue operations and accident recovery should take priority, adding that he hopes casualties will be minimized and rescue efforts completed quickly.
Democratic Party lawmaker Chai Hyun-il, who heads Chong’s campaign situation office, criticized Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon and blamed the disaster on Oh’s lack of safety awareness.
Oh’s campaign also said the mayor had suspended all campaign events for the rest of the day to assess and respond to the situation.
Oh later visited the accident site but did not issue a separate public statement.
Justice Party candidate Kwon Young-gook also announced the immediate suspension of campaign activities.
