The government has concluded that Iran was likely behind the May 4 attack on the South Korean-operated cargo ship the HMM Namu, which was struck while stranded in the Strait of Hormuz amid the U.S.-Iran conflict.

First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo announced on Wednesday that the findings of the investigation pointed toward Iran.

Investigators said the debris recovered from the objects bore a close resemblance to Iranian-made turbojet engines.

Park later added that it was difficult to determine whether the attack was intentional.

Seoul said it plans to summon the Iranian ambassador and demand a guarantee that there will be no recurrence.

The 38-thousand-ton cargo ship caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this month.
