Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda on Thursday congratulated Andris Kulbergs as he began serving as Latvia’s new prime minister.
In the message, Nausėda said Lithuania and Latvia have always been, and would remain, close neighbours and friends. The two Baltic states share political, economic, security and cultural ties, as well as a common view of major European challenges.
“I am certain that the long-standing friendship of our nations and mutual trust will remain a durable basis for bilateral relations, and that during your term as Prime Minister of Latvia we will continue to strengthen our countries’ ties comprehensively at both bilateral and multilateral levels,” the congratulatory message said.
Nausėda highlighted close cooperation between Lithuania and Latvia within Baltic and Nordic formats, as well as in the European Union and NATO. For international readers, Lithuania and Latvia are neighbouring Baltic states on the eastern edge of both the EU and NATO.
According to the Lithuanian president, regional cooperation helps address shared security challenges, protect the eastern border of the EU and NATO, support Ukraine in the face of Russia’s war of aggression, implement strategic infrastructure projects, and develop bilateral economic and cultural ties.
Nausėda said Lithuania and Latvia are united by shared values and historical experiences, and would continue working toward a common goal: ensuring security and prosperity in the Baltic region and Europe.
He also expressed confidence that the two countries would work successfully together in the European Council, the EU institution where national leaders set the bloc’s political direction, while pursuing shared priorities and contributing to a secure, united and prosperous Europe.
The Lithuanian president wished Latvia’s new prime minister success, strength and determination in carrying out his duties and working for the people of Latvia.
