The May 26 front-page article “Trump’s health drawing scrutiny” pointed to a structural problem that transcends any single president or party. I spent the end of my more than 25-year career in the Navy Medical Corps serving as the attending physician to Congress in the U.S. Capitol, and I have deep respect for military medicine. But the physicians publicly evaluating a president’s fitness are active-duty officers serving in the chain of command of the patient they assess. We would not accept an internal audit as the final word in any other institution where public trust is essential.
