WWE Clash in Italy LIVE BLOG & MATCH COVERAGE

Mutations cooked in labs, money-mad experiments, new food and medicine? New germs and accidents! ike Cubatao, “world’s most polluted town,” air melts your face, deformed children all around. Bio-technology ain’t what’s so bad, like all technology it’s in the wrong hands. Cut-throat corporations don’t give a damn when lots of people die from what they’ve made, but me? I’m just here to liveblog this here pro wrestling show for you, folks.

The show opens with Michael Cole welcoming us to the show and explaining for those of you who don’t own a shelf of historical atlases and who can’t hand-draw a rough map of Italy before, during, and after the Napoleonic Wars exactly where Turin is.

The usual montage of talent arriving at the arena follows, including Brock Lesnar repping Megadeth by way of his t-shirt, which would be disappointing to me if it weren’t for the fact that, as a Megadeth superfan, I have to live with it being Dave Mustaine’s show in the first place.

(I love Dave and got to talk to him on the phone once– I won a contest on the official Megadeth message board before some of you were born–, but he’s the most contrarian contrarian to ever disagree with what he thinks is the mainstream opinion at the current time.)

(Yeah I’m feeling a little chatty today, what of it?)

An intro video for the show follows.

GUNTHER makes his entrance for our opening match.

Commentary introduces themselves and, because this show is in Italy, the Italian commentary team at the desk beside them.

“American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes makes his entrance and we get things going.

“American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes (c) vs. GUNTHER (WWE Undisputed Men’s Championship)

Wristlock, arm wringer, GUNTHER slips out and backs Rhodes into the corner as “Let’s go GUNTHER!” chants ring out. Break forced, now the “Cody, Cody Rhodes!” singing chant offers a counterpoint, Test of Strength, the Ring General putting Cody on his knees with ease. Rhodes fights to his feet and GUNTHER rams him into the corner and breaks dirty with a chop!

Referee Dan Engler admonishes him, and the Ring General just wades in with another chop! Whip across, Rhodes slides under, drop down slap, springboard… GUNTHER DROPS HIM OUT OF MIDAIR WITH A CHOP! Another chop, a cover for two, Gojira Clutch attempted, Cody slings him off with a snapmare so the challenger just boots him back to Dream Street!

GUNTHER with a wristlock, Rhodes punching away and the Ring General pulls him in with a shoulder block to drop him! Right hands, off the ropes with an elbow, up and over, Cody follows that with a snap scoop powerslam and he’s fired up! Bionic Elbow, underhooks, Pedigree connects… NO DEAL!

Huge dropkick from the Ring General, huge lift on the Tenryu Powerbomb but Rhodes kicks out! Diving splash, Cody gets the knees up, Beautiful Disaster connects, Cross Rhodes follows… SO CLOSE! Back and forth, GUNTHER gets the Gojira Clutch locked in! Falling back to the mat, he eschews the bodyscissors in favor of rolling over and putting his weight on Cody’s back!

Back to his knees, stepping over to sit on his back, Rhodes stands up, GUNTHER hanging in there, a senton breaks the hold momentarily but the Ring General goes right back to the Gojira Clutch in the middle of the ring! Cody flagging, failing, fading, his arm waving, Engler keeping a close look at him, Rhodes gets his eyes open and gasps only for GUNTHER to roll him back around and grind his face into the mat… CODY GETS A FOOT ON THE ROPES TO FORCE THE BREAK!

Back at it, trading vicious overhand chops, a lariat from GUNTHER and Cody gives one right back! Another lariat from the champ, both men staggering, Rhodes off the ropes and the Ring General turns him inside out with a lariat! Post-match, GUNTHER is upset and confused about the cover and commentary goes over the footage and discovers that the Ring General had his foot under the ropes at the beginning of the count and Cody’s adjustment was to pull his foot away from the plane of the ropes!

GUNTHER argues with Dan Engler for a bit before spitting on the floor and storming out.
