There’s been a lot of concern about Canada’s goal scoring abilities in recent months. It’s not like Bosnia and Herzegovina bulge the old onion bag at will themselves.
Bosnia and Herzegovina were held to a scoreless draw by North Macedonia on Friday at Sarajevo’s Asim Ferhatović Hase Stadium, a result that offered both encouragement and questions ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group B opener against Canada in Toronto on June 12.
Head coach Sergej Barbarez fielded a side blending experienced internationals with several of the younger players who helped Bosnia secure a dramatic berth in only the nation’s second-ever World Cup. Despite controlling large stretches of Friday night, Bosnia were unable to find a breakthrough against a disciplined North Macedonian defence.
Bosnia generated the better opportunities, particularly before halftime. Young winger Kerim Alajbegović tested the visitors early and later forced a save, while defender Nikola Katić also directed an effort on target. Forward Samed Baždar came close before the interval as the hosts pushed for an opening goal. North Macedonia’s best chance fell to striker Bojan Miovski, whose early effort was comfortably dealt with.
Barbarez made several changes throughout the second half, introducing players such as Dennis Hadžikadunić, Tarik Muharemović and Armin Malić, but neither side could break the deadlock.
The draw extends World Cup preparations for a Bosnia squad led by veteran captain Edin Džeko, who headlines a roster that combines experienced internationals with emerging talents such as Alajbegović and midfielder Ermin Mahmić. Bosnia will play one more friendly — against Panama on June 6 — before travelling to Canada for their Group B opener.
Canada will present a far different challenge than North Macedonia. Jesse Marsch’s side will have home support at Toronto’s BMO Field. Group B also includes Qatar and Switzerland.
Bosnia’s defensive organization shown in Sarajevo on Friday night was promising, but improving their finishing will be essential if they hope to begin their World Cup with a positive result against the co-hosts.
