The wing of the Alliance for Albanians led by Ziadin Sela has formally become a new party, the Albanian League, at a congress held in Tetovo over the weekend, media in North Macedonia said on Monday.
The Alliance for Albanians split shortly before North Macedonia’s parliamentary elections in May 2024. One faction remained under Arben Taravari’s leadership, while another backed former chair Ziadin Sela. The formal reason for the split was disagreement over how the Alliance for Albanians should run in the elections.
Launching the Albanian League, Sela told congress delegates that the party was entering a period of intensive work and the formation of new structures. He said the League would be an active political factor and would not remain a silent observer of processes affecting Albanians’ collective rights.
At the congress in Tetovo, delegates unanimously backed Sela as chair of the new political structure, with 713 votes in favour.
