Around 45.61 million people residents in Germany were in employment in April 2026. After seasonal adjustment, the number of employed persons edged down by 6,000 from March 2026, remaining broadly stable month on month (MoM). Employment declined by an average of 17,000 people per month between May 2025 and March 2026, Destatis said in a press release.
On an unadjusted basis, employment increased by 88,000 people, or 0.2 per cent, from March 2026. However, this rise was slightly below the average monthly increase of 95,000 recorded during April in the 2023-2025 period.
Germany’s employment remained broadly stable in April 2026, with 45.61 million people employed, according to Destatis.
Seasonally adjusted employment was nearly unchanged from March, while YoY employment declined 0.4 per cent.
Unemployment rose 1.2 per cent from a year earlier to 1.68 million people, though adjusted unemployment fell slightly MoM, with the rate steady at 3.8 per cent.
Compared with April 2025, employment declined by 184,000 people, marking a 0.4 per cent fall YoY. The decline extended the downward trend seen since August 2025. Annual employment contraction had stood at 0.3 per cent in January and February 2026 before worsening to 0.4 per cent in March and April.
Meanwhile, unemployment in Germany rose modestly from a year earlier. Labour force survey data showed that 1.68 million people were unemployed in April 2026, up by 21,000 people, or 1.2 per cent, compared with April 2025. The unemployment rate increased slightly to 3.9 per cent from 3.8 per cent a year earlier.
Seasonally adjusted figures indicated some improvement on a monthly basis. The number of unemployed people fell by 13,000, or 0.8 per cent, from March 2026 to 1.67 million in April 2026. The adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.8 per cent.
