The ruling Democratic Party has expressed deep regret over some polling stations in Seoul seeing shortages of ballot papers during Wednesday’s local elections, but dismissed the main opposition People Power Party’s calls for the Seoul mayoral race to be held again.
In a news conference held at the National Assembly, Jo Seoung-lae, who heads the party’s campaigning headquarters, said the latest incident isn’t one that can be settled simply with an apology.
He said the ruling camp will, by all means, hold those responsible for the poor election management to account regardless of the results of the vote count.
On the People Power Party calling on the National Election Commission(NEC) to immediately stop vote counting for the Seoul mayor race and for that race to be held again due to the ballot shortages, Jo said the matter is not worth considering and warned the main opposition party to refrain from defying the will of Seoul’s voters.
Jo said regardless of the shortages, many citizens cast their ballots and vote counting is under way, adding that the NEC will unlikely to be able to decide to suspend vote count.
