North Macedonia (then referred to as ‘FYR Macedonia’) debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1998 at the Birmingham National Indoor Arena.

Their first entry was courtesy of Vlado Janevski and his ballad Ne Zori, Zoro (‘Dawn, Don’t Rise’) who was invited to represent his country having won Skopje Fest earlier that year.

Their most persistent artist is singer-songwriter Kaliopi, who did not make it through the EBU’s preliminary audio-only qualifying round in 1996 with Samo Ti (‘Only You’), but did eventually debut in Baku 2012 where she finished 13th with Crno I Belo (‘Black and White’). Her next attempt in 2016 (Dona) narrowly missed out on qualifying from the Second Semi-Final.

In 2019, Tamara Todevska delivered North Macedonia’s greatest result to date, placing seventh with her ballad Proud, and winning the jury vote ahead of the Contest victor Duncan Laurence.
