The East City Giants (0-0) host the Kuopio Steelers (0-0) on Thursday night in Helsinki as the 2026 Maple League season gets underway, with an unusual set of circumstances adding extra intrigue to the opening game.

    Unusual circumstances

The season opener in Myllypuro, Helsinki comes with a pair of unexpected storylines. Due to delays in the delivery of new league uniforms, the East City Giants will take the field wearing Finland’s national team uniforms.

More importantly, the Steelers are expected to be without their American imports after transfer paperwork delays left those players ineligible until Friday. If that situation remains unchanged, it could significantly alter the outlook for a game that many expected the visitors to enter as favorites.

    Familiar faces

There is no shortage of connections between the two teams.

East City Giants quarterback K’Hari Lane will face his former club after leading the Kuopio offense last season. Head coach Mika Eloranta praised Lane’s intelligence, decision-making and ability to create plays both through the air and with his legs.

On the other sideline, former ECG receiver Daniel Rubinstein could make his first appearance against his old team. The Steelers have announced Johan Rabin as their starting quarterback for the opener.

    Giants aiming higher

The East City Giants showed progress during the 2025 season, finishing sixth in the standings and entering 2026 with a deeper roster.

Eloranta highlighted imports Austin Brock, Tyran Dixon and Nolan Bernati as players expected to make major contributions. The Giants have also added several players from the former Helsinki Wolverines, including Sebastian Lugora, while maintaining much of last year’s core.

Despite the improvements, opposing Maple League coaches predicted ECG to finish sixth again in 2026.

Steelers chasing a return to the top

The Kuopio Steelers enter the season with higher expectations. Led once again by head coach Pekka Utriainen, the club was projected by opposing coaches to finish second in the league.

Quarterback Slade Jarman, running back Josh Mack, linebacker Chris Cox and defensive lineman Damien Lowery headline the team’s new American contingent, although their availability for Thursday remains uncertain. With seven medal finishes in the last eight seasons, the Steelers have a long history of success and will be eager to start another championship push with a victory in Helsinki.
