Germany will continue to be a reliable partner for Montenegro in implementing key reforms, especially in the areas of the rule of law, strengthening institutions and the fight against corruption, said German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a meeting with Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović in Tivat.

According to the President’s Office, Merz congratulated Milatović on the successful organization of today’s European Union (EU) – Western Balkans Summit and praised Montenegro’s progress.

“He confirmed that Germany will continue to be a reliable partner in implementing key reforms, especially in the areas of the rule of law, strengthening institutions and the fight against corruption,” the statement said.

It is stated that by coming to Montenegro and participating in the EU-Western Balkans Summit, at the invitation of Milatović, Merz became the first German Chancellor to visit Montenegro.

This, it is added, represents additional confirmation of the importance of this international gathering and the quality of bilateral relations between Montenegro and Germany.

“During the substantive and friendly conversation, the high level of relations between Montenegro and Germany was confirmed, which are linked by intensive political dialogue, a strong alliance within NATO and a shared commitment to European values,” the statement said.

Milatović thanked Merc for the continued support that Germany provides to Montenegro on its European path.

He emphasized that Montenegro remains a leader in the enlargement process with a clear goal of becoming the first EU member state by 2028.

“The interlocutors agreed that economic cooperation should be further improved in the coming period, with a special focus on creating a more favorable environment for new German investments and intensifying economic ties between the two countries,” the statement said.
