Iran-US war latest: Tehran says it has fired warning shots at US destroyers after Trump claimed US doesn’t need a deal

A British couple jailed on spying charges in Iran have lost an appeal against their convictions, their family have said.

Craig and Lindsay Foreman were handed 10-year prison sentences in February after being convicted of espionage, which they both deny.

The couple’s family have claimed they were not permitted to attend their appeal hearing.

They were jailed following their arrest in January 2025 while travelling through Iran during a round-the-world trip by motorcycle.

The couple are on a hunger strike, according to the family, adding that all communication between them has been cut off by Iranian authorities.

The World Food Programme has warned on Friday that the Middle East conflict is pushing millions of people closer to hunger due to rising fuel and transport costs while funding shortfalls force aid agencies to scale back assistance.

In March, the WFP forecast as many as 45 million people could fall into acute food insecurity if oil prices remained around $100 per barrel through June. That scenario is now unfolding, the agency said.

In Somalia, 6.5 million people – roughly a third of the population – are expected to face severe hunger in 2026, while Afghanistan could see 17.4 million people affected, the WFP said. The situation is projected to worsen, with an additional 2.5 million Somalis and 2.3 million Afghans at risk of falling into food insecurity if disruptions persist. Both countries are reliant on imported energy and food.

The Middle East crisis comes amid a deep funding shortfall for aid agencies. The WFP said it expected to serve 1.5 million fewer people globally in 2026, and an extra 9 million fewer if the situation persists for six months.

Iran’s national football team is heading to their World Cup base this weekend, buoyed by a 2-0 friendly victory over Mali in Turkey, even though signifcant uncertainty continues to cloud their tournament participation.

A top Iranian official has said a potential peace deal between the US and Iran is weighted on the Trump administration agreeing to release $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets.

In an interview with CNN Mohsen Rezaei, military adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei warned the US would “enter into a dark corridor” should it resume fighting.

“The negotiations are at a deadlock and Trump must break this deadlock,” he said.

“The ball is in Trump’s court.”

It comes as Iran reportedly demanded the release of $12 billion in frozen funds after an agreement is signed with the US. This money would be followed by another $12 billion, according to CNN.

But the US has concerns that unfreezing the funds could remove a key leverage point over the regime.

Israel’s air force struck different parts of southern Lebanon on Friday as the military issued evacuation warnings for nine villages, including one that has been spared much of the destruction and was sheltering thousands of people displaced by the three-month war.

Six people were killed, Lebanon’s state news agency reported. The warnings forced hundreds of families to flee the village of Anqoun and the area of Aarnaya, on the edge of the predominantly Christian village of Maghdoucheh, near the southern port city of Sidon.

Lebanon’s president has accused Iran of using his country as a “bargaining chip” with their negotiation with the US.

Speaking at the presidential palace in Beirut Joseph Aoun told CNN in an interview that Lebanese people are “fed up” with the war between Israel and the Iranian-backed militia Hezbollah.

It comes as Israel and Lebanon agreed to pause fighting, but Hezbollah objected to the agreement.

Aoun told CNN that Iran is “not trying to help us … the people of Lebanon are paying the price … for the sake of your own interest,” adding, “our interests … do not coincide with your interests.”

He added the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) “are using Lebanon as a bargaining chip in their negotiation.”

Israel’s air force struck several parts of southern Lebanon on Friday, issuing evacuation warnings for nine villages.

The strikes killed nine people in six locations in southern Lebanon, the state news agency reported.

Meanwhile, the new warnings forced hundreds of families to flee the village of Anqoun and the area of Aarnaya, on the edge of the predominantly Christian community of Maghdoucheh, near the southern port city of Sidon.

Elsewhere, people began to return to their homes to survey the aftermath of fighting between Israeli forces and the Hezbollah militant group.
