The president of the Freedom and Justice Party (SSP), Dragan Đilas, assessed today that “the Merc-Macron non-paper is encouraging for every country in the Western Balkans that has a pro-European government, because it provides candidate countries with various benefits,” but that “the problem for Serbia, while Vučić and his organized crime group are in power, is the fact that each of these benefits is directly linked to the country’s progress in the accession process.”
“And Serbia is not progressing in this process, but regressing. Therefore, at this moment, only the part of the entire proposal that clearly states that ‘the entire process can be reversible in the event of a candidate country regressing in reforms or in terms of the basic values and principles of the European Union’ would apply to Serbia,” Đilas stressed in a written statement, reported the SSP.
He emphasized that “all of Vučić’s governments are anti-European” and that “the only chance for Serbia to move towards Europe again is the removal of this regime, which is alienated from the people and completely entwined with crime.”
“That is why Serbia is constantly regressing in the areas of judicial reforms, holding fair and honest elections, fighting corruption, media freedom, building institutions, harmonizing foreign policy with the European Union. And it is not just us who say this, it is also said by ODIHR, the European Parliament, the European Commission, Transparency International, Human Rights Watch, Reporters Without Borders and many other organizations that assess the situation in these areas,” said Đilas.
According to him, “that is why, in 14 years, Serbia has gone from being the leader of the Western Balkans in the field of European integration, a country that was believed to have a chance of becoming a member by 2018, to being at the bottom and can look with envy at the progress, primarily of Montenegro and Albania.”
“Aleksandar Vučić, regardless of formal statements, does not want Serbia to become a member of the European Union. He has been fighting against it for 33 years, from the first day he became a member of Vojislav Šešelj’s Serbian Radical Party until today. Someone who signs agreements with the Communist Party of China, who adopts Mrdić’s laws, who appoints criminals to the most important positions in the police, who spends tens of billions of euros on jobs without tenders, cannot lead Serbia into Europe,” said Đilas.
