Switzerland headquartered Holcim and TotalEnergies have inaugurated a 31 MW floating solar plant at Holcim’s Obourg facility in Belgium. The project uses 55,000 solar panels installed on a repurposed quarry lake. According to Holcim, it is the largest floating solar power plant in Europe. The facility is expected to supply up to 15% of the electricity demand of the GO4ZERO plant by 2030 and the output is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of about 8,500 homes. Holcim said the project could reduce CO2 emissions by 110,000 metric tons over its operating lifetime. More than 700 meters of horizontal directional drilling were completed to connect the installation to the electrical substation.
