Police have raided the South Gyeongsang provincial complex over alleged use of deepfake contents and involvement of public officials in violation of the Public Official Election Act in the June 3 local election campaign of Governor Park Wan-su of the main opposition People Power Party(PPP).

The Gyeongnam Provincial Police sent investigators to the provincial complex to conduct the search and seizure inside the public information division and the Electronic News Gathering(ENG) camera content room starting 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The provincial police said the search was also being carried out at locations outside the government complex.

Earlier, the police launched an investigation into allegations of false propaganda by nine people, including Park’s election campaign officials and current and former employees at the provincial government.

On May 29, the provincial election commission filed a complaint with the prosecution after a whistleblower who had worked for Park’s campaign claimed they were instructed by provincial employees to make deepfake and other illegal AI contents slandering Park’s opponent, Kim Kyoung-soo.
