South Korea and the United States have reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to provide extended deterrence for Seoul by utilizing its full range of military assets, including nuclear capabilities, against North Korea’s security threats.

According to a joint press statement following the allies’ sixth meeting of their Nuclear Consultation Group(NCG) in Seoul on Thursday, the two sides have affirmed their joint goal regarding the North’s denuclearization.

Regarding the advancement of Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile capabilities and the changing security environment, the allies reviewed their security and information sharing, procedures for consultation under a nuclear emergency, and their conventional-nuclear integration strategy.

They also drew up a guideline for information protection that is necessary for NCG activities and consultations.

The NCG was launched in July 2023 under the Washington Declaration adopted by the leaders of the two countries as the allies’ consultative body to better respond to North Korea’s nuclear threats.
