    According to him, the core of the agreements with Hungary is that policies regarding national minorities will be implemented “within the framework of current legislation.” This refers to law, approved by this session of Parliament.

    Kachka emphasized that further details will be provided as part of the action plan for the protection of national minorities, which was approved by the government last May.

    The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the previous Hungarian government refused to go along with the general plan and insisted on a purely bilateral agreement.

    “We have finally convinced the Hungarian government that the action plan we presented a year and a half ago will serve as an adequate safeguard for the rights and interests of national minorities. We do not have a separate agreement regarding Hungary. We have an agreement with the European Union regarding the further development of policy on national minorities in general,” Kachka stated.

    He added that the Hungarian government is convinced that the current action plan upholds the rights of the Hungarian minority “as is.”

    “They have ample opportunities both for education and for exercising their language rights,” said Kachka, noting that this includes the use of dual street names and the ability to display symbols during celebrations of commemorative dates.

    “There are also specific issues related to the educational process, particularly regarding students’ ability to speak the languages of national minorities during breaks. This is perhaps the only substantive issue,” he said.
