Residents of Vilnius were briefly urged to stay alert after radar detected an unidentified object that later proved to be a meteorological balloon.

Early Saturday morning, Lithuania warned Vilnius residents about a possible drone intrusion into its airspace and scrambled NATO fighters. The alert was lifted after it became clear that it was a weather balloon.

According to the LRT channel, the ‘yellow’ level of alert regarding the air threat, declared for Vilnius County, was canceled after the intruding object was identified as a weather balloon that had entered Lithuania’s airspace from Belarus.

It is noted that NATO air-patrolling fighters took to the air during the alert, which was lifted around 11:00. The safety status returned to ‘white’, allowing residents to return to normal activities.

The Lithuanian Minister of Defense, Robertas Kaunas, stated that the object detected by radar and resembling an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) turned out to be a meteorological balloon that accidentally entered Lithuania’s airspace.

The head of the National Crisis Management Center, Vilmantas Vitkauskas, confirmed that the initial radar signature of the object matched that of a UAV, which led to the deployment of forces capable of neutralizing the object if needed.

The object was identified, most likely, as a meteorological balloon, not a drone, and residents were informed that the air threat had been lifted. Nevertheless, we recommend remaining vigilant, as similar objects may appear again

After the incident and further recommendations

It is noted that today’s alert was brief. Residents of Vilnius County received mobile phone notifications urging them to stay calm, and shortly thereafter it was announced that the threat was absent, and the status returned to ‘white’.

Vitkauskas advised residents to keep mobile phones at hand with sound on to quickly receive any future alerts.

As reported, this was a brief incident and similar cases may recur, so citizens were urged to stay vigilant.

In summary, the incident underscores the importance of early warning systems and the rapid response of security forces, even when it turns out that the threat was caused by a weather balloon.
