The head of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) Mindaugas Sinkevičius announced that he would form a new government and assume the office of prime minister of the country.
In a post on his Facebook page, he confirmed his intention to take responsibility for forming the government and to lead it.

He assured that he made this decision in light of the Lithuanian people’s expectations.

Plans for the Government and Priorities
The leader of the LSDP said that the government under his leadership would primarily focus on addressing the most important problems, including rising prices and the cost of living, social inequality, and poverty.
He also promised to focus on transforming the Lithuanian economy through the development of artificial intelligence, digital solutions, the defense industry, and high technologies.
Sinkevičius stressed the importance of strengthening national security and said he is ready to mobilize coalition partners for joint work that is important for the country.
It is noted that the LSDP leader will replace the current prime minister Inga Rugienė, who was appointed to the post in August last year. The government led by Rugienė was sworn in in September of the same year.
In early June this year, the LSDP council decided to change the ruling majority, excluding the Star Nimanu party and initiating consultations with the Union of Democrats “In the Name of Lithuania.”
On Monday, the leaders and negotiators of the parties that began coalition talks last week agreed on the distribution of ministries.
Also this week, a coalition agreement is planned to be signed, which outlines commitments to implementing the program of the 21st Government, approved by the Seimas. This signals the formation of a new Cabinet of Ministers, since the current government is the 20th. The coalition agreement also provides for the appointment of the prime minister and the Seimas spokesperson by the Social Democrats, but no specific names have yet been announced.
In February the Lithuanian government approved an updated National Security Strategy, which states an existential threat to the country and to the entire Euro-Atlantic community from Russia.
The formation of a new Cabinet takes place amid growing political discussion about concrete steps in the fields of security and the economy.
