Berkley and Royal Oak Students Studying Science Earn DAR Scholarships
(Sharlan Douglas, June 16, 2026)
Berkley, Royal Oak, MI – Two high school seniors will go to the University of Michigan in the fall with scientific publishing credits already on their resumes. Scholarships from the Ezra Parker chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will pave the way.
Inspired by her work at Corewell Hospital, Berkley resident and Berkley High School student Lydia Binelli will study biology, health and safety. “Witnessing care at several different hospitals over the summer opened my eyes to the discrepancies that often go unnoticed,” she said in her application.
Co-authoring an article for an academic journal is just one of her accomplishments. She raised funds so that young surgery patients could take a stuffed bear home with them after surgery. She is the Science National Honor Society president and serves on the Berkley School District Student Advisory Board.
Haneen Awada of Royal Oak received the chapter’s Tenhave Scholarship. It is funded by a grant from a longtime Royal Oak school teacher and is awarded to a Royal Oak High School student planning to study in a STEM field.
Awada, who plans to study biomolecular science, wrote for the MedReport Foundation. She is the president of the Interact Club at ROHS and a student representative to the board of education.
“Curiosity is my compass,” she wrote in her application.
