An anonymous NATO official says Moscow’s anti satellite efforts could escalate fighting into space, forcing new strategic choices and raising risks to allied communications and missions.
NATO’s space intelligence capabilities far exceed Russia’s available resources, and Russia understands that expanding the war into space, including by attempting to strike the alliance’s satellites, will change the nature of the conflict.
According to an anonymous senior NATO official in Brussels, NATO is closely monitoring the development of Russian capabilities in anti-satellite warfare and the development of their own satellite programs.

At the same time, he emphasized that Russia significantly trails NATO in space reconnaissance capabilities, while also spending substantial funds on its own anti-satellite programs.
Regarding threats to NATO’s satellite network, the official clarified that they are largely ground-based, and some threats in orbit are also tracked.

Speaking of the alliance’s advantages, the official noted that the size and scale of our space intelligence architecture and radio-frequency systems provide high resilience.

NATO believes that both countries continue to race in military innovation to accelerate deployment and gain an advantage on the battlefield, but Ukraine has a greater chance of winning these races.
