ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A sea of red and yellow filled Centennial Olympic Park on Sunday as thousands of soccer fans gathered at the FIFA Fan Festival in downtown Atlanta to celebrate Spain’s World Cup victory.
Supporters packed the park hours before kickoff, watching the match on giant video screens and creating an atmosphere that felt more like Madrid than Midtown Atlanta.
“We are going to win the World Cup. For sure, for sure,” one fan said before the match.
As Spain surged to victory, cheers erupted across the park with each goal. Fans waved Spanish flags, sang chants, and embraced as the final result became clear.
“We were able to take the win and we’re happy. It was a good game. Go Spain,” said Spain supporter Denzell Shirley.
The FIFA Fan Festival has become a popular gathering spot during the World Cup, drawing fans from around the globe to experience the tournament together without attending matches inside the stadium.
Pete Intza, an American with Spanish roots, said the event brought together two passions.
“This is amazing,” Intza said. “I’m from America, but I’ve got roots in Spain. This is the best of both worlds right here. In Atlanta, the World Cup is going on, the energy is high, and we’ve got a Spain victory. It doesn’t get better than that.”
The celebration intensified as Spain continued to dominate. Fans jumped, sang, and waved flags while the Spanish national team cruised to victory, turning the park into one massive party.
“Viva España,” said fan Fernando Garcia. “Lamine Yamal is the next best player of all time next to Messi. We’re taking it home again.”
After the final whistle, supporters lingered throughout the afternoon, soaking in a memorable World Cup moment and celebrating with fans from around the world.
“If you are not paying $2,000 for a ticket, this is the spot right here,” Intza said. “People from all different countries and nationalities. This is what it’s all about — the World Cup.”
The FIFA Fan Festival at Centennial Olympic Park will continue throughout the tournament, giving fans a free opportunity to watch matches, enjoy live entertainment, and experience the global excitement surrounding the World Cup.
